We need your help finding a new space!

Hello Gainesville Girls Rock Camp Community!

We found out today that the school that we used last summer will not be vacant again this summer for our camp. We need your help finding a new space to host camp! We require an assembly room and at least 5 classrooms. A school, community center, or church would be ideal. GGRC is a week-long day camp. We would not be using the space in the evenings. Email us with your ideas: gainesvillegirlsrockcamp@gmail.com! Thanks!

Upcoming Benefit Show February 13th

Join us for an evening of romannnntic entertainment benefiting GGRC on Saturday, February 13th starting at 8pm at the Civic Media Center, 433 South Main Street. For Valentine’s Eve we’ve challenged a dozen sets of local lovers to start bands together. Participant paramours have been given 2 months to write at least 2 originals and learn at least one cover which they will perform in a brief set on Valentine’s Eve at a public concert inside the Civic Media Center.

Hot chocolate will be available for donations and we’ll have a cozy fire blazing in the courtyard. A suggested $5 entry fee will be accepted at the door, all proceeds will be split between Gainesville Girls Rock Camp and the Civic Media Center.

The Civic Media Center and Library is a reading room and library for alternative and non-corporate press, as well as a community activism center in Gainesville, Florida.

Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is a local music camp that uses music and performance as a platform to encourage self-esteem and self-expression in young girls.

About GGRC

Logo

Mission Statement: Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is an organization that uses music and performance as a platform to encourage self-esteem, self-expression, and community for girls.

GGRC primarily functions as a week-long summer day camp that accepts regional girls aged 9-17 years old. During camp, girls receive music instruction by local women musicians and are placed into bands. With the encouragement of their camp counselors, each band writes a song which they ultimately perform at a live music venue downtown at a public showcase following camp for their friends and families. Throughout the week, the girls also attend workshops aimed at enhancing their self-esteem such as women’s self-defense, poetry & lyric workshops, dance classes, art therapy, women’s history workshops, and guided group discussions about boundaries & consent. As the girls gain fluency on their instruments over the week, open mics and jam sessions break out during free time. Volunteers encourage a playful and respectful non-violent atmosphere that facilitates friendships and a sense of positive culture at camp. Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is entirely volunteer-run by local women, many of whom are musicians themselves and perform in local bands. To keep the camp population diverse, organizers strive to keep camp fees low and offer both full and partial scholarships, as well as free lunch and snacks each day of camp. GGRC is able to cover the costs of camp through community outreach throughout the year which includes musical benefits, film screenings, and tabling, among other forms of outreach.

Throughout the year GGRC’s organizers remain active facilitating private and group music lessons with campers who are interested in performing outside of camp. Camp staff are also in the process of building a gear lending library in a local warehouse where music gear that is being stored in between camp sessions can be lent out to local girls or low-income musicians.
